Boeing Leads Airbus in 2012 Orders

Boeing's commitment to fuel efficiency and customer comforts could be the key behind the increase in orders. 787 Dreamliner team honored with 2012 Aviation Week Laureate Award in Aeronautics/Propulsion by the editors of Aviation Week.

In terms of jet orders this year, the Boeing Co. is leading rival Airbus: 385-to-91

Boeing reported the 385 orders as of March 6. These include orders for the 737, 747, 767, 777 and 787. According to the Herald, Airbus had reported 91 jet orders, although the European company posted better sales last year.

The 787 Dreamliner team was honored this week with a 2012 Aviation Week Laureate Award in Aeronautics/Propulsion by the editors of Aviation Week for combining “advanced aerodynamics, new composite materials, more-electric systems, fuel-efficient engines and a totally new production paradigm," said Graham Warwick, Aviation Week’s senior technology editor. "And now it's paying off for both the manufacturer and the operator."

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is 20 percent more fuel efficient than similarly sized airplanes, and provides long-distance capabilities with mid-size capacity, allowing airlines to offer new non-stop routes.

Sixty customers have 868 Dreamliners on order, making the 787 the fastest-selling widebody airplane in commercial aviation history, according to a Boeing press release.

In addition to the popularity of the 787, November’s announcement of the could also be behind the increased orders.
