Registration Open for 6th Annual Renton FilmFrenzy

Information from the City of Renton 

More than 25 filmmaking teams are expected to compete for $1,700 in cash prizes and the coveted Curvee Awards, when Renton becomes a giant film studio from October 4 to 6 for the 6th Annual Renton FilmFrenzy 50-hour filmmaking competition.

This year’s FilmFrenzy offers a number of new components:

·         Independent Filmmakers Bootcamp, which will cover script development, lighting, filming, and editing, will be held on Sunday September 28, at Renton High School.  There is no cost to attend for those producers who enter the FilmFrenzy. ·         Indie Filmmaker meetup, a networking opportunity for regional filmmakers, will be held on Wednesday, September 25, from 7:30 - 10:30 p.m., at Carco Theatre.  Admission is free to all interested filmmakers. 

·         2013 winning filmmakers this year will receive free admission to the 2014 Seattle Film Summit.

The Renton FilmFrenzy

Competing filmmakers will have from 5 p.m. on Friday, October 4, through 7 p.m. on Sunday, October 6, to write, shoot, edit and submit a short film.  At the beginning of the competition, participating filmmakers will be provided with “CurveBall” Challenges, which could include incorporating a line of dialogue, a task and/or filming at a specific location in Renton.

Renton FilmFrenzy filmmakers may enter their films in one of two divisions: Student Division (high school and below) and Open Division. There is a $50 entry fee for the Open Division and a $25 entry fee for the Student Division.

Films can be up to four minutes in length and must be shot completely in Renton. All genres of film are welcome, although films must be appropriate for all audiences. 

This year’s judges are Beth Barrett, Director of Programming, Seattle International Film Festival;

Tim Everitt, Owner, Tim Everitt Productions; Ali Mohsenian, Owner, Arc Media Studios; Adam Sekuler, Program Director, Northwest Film Forum; and Mitch Shepherd, winner of the 2012 and 2011 Renton FilmFrenzy Best Picture awards and Renton Municipal Arts Commission member.

A total of $1,700 in cash prizes and the Curvee Awards will be presented October 22 during the Curvee Gala Awards at the Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center, 400 S. 2nd Street, in downtown Renton.  There is no admission charge and all ages are welcome.  Winners of Best Picture, the top three Open Division films and the top three Student Division films will also receive free admissions to the 2014 Seattle Film Summit.  Renton is a sponsor of the 2013 Seattle Film Summit.

The film winning Best Picture will also be screened at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) as a part of SIFF’s week-long program in Renton in 2014.

Renton FilmFrenzy Screening

All submitted films will be shown during the FilmFrenzy Screening, which will take place at 7 p.m., Saturday, October 19, at the Renton Civic Theatre, 507 South Third Street, in downtown Renton.   People attending the screening will vote on their favorite film and the winning filmmakers will receive a special Curvee Award at the Gala.

People’s Choice Award

Thanks to the Renton Reporter (www.pnwlocalnews.com/south_king/ren/), members of the public will have the chance to vote on their favorite Renton FilmFrenzy films.  All films entered will be posted on the Renton Reporter website for viewing and voting after the Curvee Awards Gala.  The winning film will receive a special “People’s Choice” Curvee award at a November Renton City Council meeting.
