Renton Vet Clinic Reports More Pets Getting Stoned

Dr. Beth Guerra of the Animal Critical Care and Emergency Services clinic told KIRO last week the uptick is related to the legalization of marijuana in the state.

Puget Sound area pets appear to be getting into marijuana one way or another, and the number of veterinarian visits related to pot poisoning so far this year has animal experts around Puget Sound pleading with owners: be aware and be honest.

KIRO TV reported last week from Renton's Animal Critical Care and Emergency Services clinic that this particular facility has already seen more than 35 such cases so far this year.

Dr. Beth Guerra told KIRO she believed the uptick is coinciding with the legalization of recreational marijuana use for adults, brought about by user-approved I-502 last fall.

Guerra said the pets either find their owner's stash or pick up remnants on the sidewalk. Both owners who use and don't use marijuana are encouraged to be more watchful of their pets' behaviors and if a vet visit is needed, be honest about what your pet may have gotten into to avoid costly bills later on.
