Renton Caters to Kid-Friendly Dinner Dates

Mom and Dad need a break from the kitchen, and microwave meals aren't an option. Solution? Foster some family time and take the clan out for a mid-week breakfast, lunch, or dinner date.

Sometimes parenting—like marriage, work, or life in general—leaves you stuck in a rut.  Get up, get everyone doing what they need to be doing for the day, finish that, eat, bedtime, repeat. Weekends sometimes offer some deviation, but often it’s only in the form of running errands and endless soccer games. Why not take a break every once in a while to reconnect with someone that you might not actually have a real conversation with on a daily basis?

I’m talking about your kids, of course! When was the last time you went out with them for fun? Their idea of fun might involve a Sounders game or Bullwinkle’s for video games, but that can get pricey… and time-consuming. Instead, I’d like to take an occasional look at places for cheap local dates with your kiddos.

One of our family’s favorite date night treats is cheaper AND somewhat healthier than a fast food burger.  Tuesday nights in our house are meatball nights, and where does one go to get cheap and tasty meatballs around here?

, of course.

Something about IKEA appeals to both kids and adults, and in Renton we’re lucky that it’s right in town.  On Tuesday nights, a plate full of 15 meatballs, mashed potatoes, and associated toppings are only $2.49.  Toss in a cone of frozen yogurt on the way out for just $1, and you’re out the door cheaper than many fast food places.  The nutrition, on the other hand, is up for you to decide.

Breakfasts are similarly inexpensive at IKEA if you’re heading out on a Saturday morning, or you have younger kiddos.  The Restaurant opens at 9 a.m., an hour before the store itself opens.  For just $.99 you can get a plate of scrambled eggs, potatoes, and bacon.  Another dollar buys you French toast sticks to go with it, or you could go with the ever-popular Swedish pancakes.

One note of caution: for maximum “date” potential, sit away from the “kids” area, as they’ve recently installed a TV.  If you really want to have the chance to sit and chat with your kiddos, keeping in mind that it’s the sole purpose of your outing, you might want to steer clear of that little distraction.
