Patch Picks For The Renton Farmers Market: Aug.16

Peaches, pickles, plums, petunias and…..hot dogs? They are all available at the market this week.

Are you in pickle on what to do with that plethora of peaches? Do you have a peck of cucumber pickles that you picked up and need a recipe for? I have ideas for both. You can pick up your peaches and your cucumber pickles from Acma Orchards or First Fruits.

My friend, Janice Tanner (widow of former mayor, Jesse Tanner), gave me the easiest recipe for sweet-and-sour pickles ever.  I’ll share if you ask (scbressler@comcast.net) and they are perfect for those outdoor parties we are all savoring right now.

And, speaking of parties, why don’t you whip up a batch of peach bellinis? They are super tasty, require a tad of work, but are so worth it, particularly for a brunch party.

Make a simple syrup from ½ cup sugar and ½ cup water. Heat in a sauce pan until the syrup dissolves and then cool. Meanwhile blanch and then peel about 5 peaches. Blend with your simple syrup until pureed. You can do this days before your brunch and refrigerate.

Put your puree in a champagne glass and top it off with Prosecco or Champagne and a mint leaf. You can pick up a bottle of Prosecco or champagne at .

The Renton Lions Club (watch for an article about their camp that will post later this week) has been doing great things in Renton since 1917, including the volunteers who work every single week at the Farmers Market serving up hot dogs and Polish sausages. You can load yours up with kraut and all of the toppings and know that your money has gone to a good cause.

Smith Brothers Farms is another regular at the market—take a look at all they have to offer if you haven’t before—and you’ll likely be surprised the way I was. More than just milk—although they have plenty of that to offer you—they carry cheese, cream cheese, cottage cheese, butter, sour cream, and eggs, and much more through their home delivery service.

Next week at the market is Western Days. Stop by Renton Western Wear beforehand for a new cowboy hat or a pair of boots.
