Patch Picks for Black History Month
Celebrate Black History Month with dancing, story-telling, cooking, films, or seminars.
- The will host children’s book author, Kunle Oguneye on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 11 a.m. The author will read folk-tales, elaborate the tales with music, and even teach a little Swahili. The author was born and raised in Nigeria. Admission is free with the price of admission to the museum. ($3/adults, $1/children). Free for museum members.
- Do you have a budding chef in the house? Does he or she enjoy learning about culture and world cuisines? To celebrate Black History Month, take your little culinary genius on a road-trip to the PCC in Redmond to learn about the agriculture traditions of African-American culture. Plantation cooking emphasized fresh ingredients straight from the farm. Dishes your young chef might prepare include: Johnny cakes with black-eyed peas, citrus kale salad, or sweet potato pie.
- Bellevue College has been celebrating Black History Month during February. There is still time to catch several lectures and exhibits, all free of charge. The historical exhibit “Northwest Black Pioneers” runs through Feb. 26. Other activities include a Feb. 22 film and discussion as a companion to the history exhibit, and a Feb. 18 discussion about the “Color of wealth: The Story Beyond the racial divide.” Consult the college website for more information and specific times.
- If films and lectures aren’t your thing—Bellevue College is also hosting a 365 days of Kwanzaa and potluck dinner. Feb. 26 at 6 p.m.
- How about a little dance celebration for Black History month? On Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma, soak up some R/B, hip/hop, and soul by Brave New World. A long slate of performers are set to perform, including, including headliner, Shyan Selah, from The Republic of Sound that performs fusion rock. Call 206-707-1378 for more information. Cost is $10.
