New storefronts To Open Soon At The Landing

Several new store openings and investment in The Landing may signal an economic rebound.

As the Pacific Northwest weather begins to usher in spring, a trio of budding storefronts will bloom at The Landing.

Panera Bread, located on the corner of Park Avenue N. and N. 10th Place, has its opening scheduled for March 18; , along Park Avenue N. will open by March 31 with an official grand opening set for April 3, according to a company spokesperson; and Mucho Burrito will open by the end of April.

The outdoor-style, urban shopping mall welcomed its first tenant — — in October 2007. Now nearly 40 businesses occupy 80 percent of the "leasable square footage," according to The Landing's leasing office.

The Landing welcomes this run of new retail business. Eyes on the Landing and were the last additions in 2010, and Fresh Way Pizza was the first new tenant to open in the new year on January 15.

A number of open houses and, now, anniversary celebrations continue to pepper the area's social calendar.

Last month, Eyes on the Landing hosted an official ribbon cutting ceremony that drew dozens of people, including council members Randy Corman and Marcie Palmer for wine, hors d'oeuvres, and live music by Kristy O.

"It was wonderful to see all of our new patients and family members come to help us celebrate," wrote owner Donna Jones in an email to Patch, calling the event "a great success."

On Tuesday of this week, owners Ron and Kelly Stilwell will celebrate their coffee shop's one-year anniversary. The March 8 celebration includes a free third-pound of coffee beans to the first 75 customers, in addition to randomly selected complimentary drinks throughout the day.

And then there are the soon-to-open retailers: Panera Bread, Dick's and Mucho Burrito. Patch will post more updates as the openings draw near, and as more businesses take up residence in Renton.

In addition to slow and steady growth at The Landing, two current businesses have expanded, said Renton's Economic Development Coordinator Suzanne Dale Estey at a meeting Monday in City Hall. She also noted 's recent expansion, and Regal Cinema's decision to add a "premium experience" theater that includes a 50-foot movie screen and surround sound.

The new "extra fancy" theater experience with enhanced sound and a larger screen is only the second one in Washington state, said Alex Pietsch, Renton's economic, neighborhood and strategic planning administrator.

"All of the stores that opened in The Landing are doing well and it's good that Regal is continuing to invest here," he said.

Next month, a slew of runners will descend on The Landing for the second annual Seahawks 12K run on April 10. Valley Medical will also jump into the mix with a 5K run/walk on the same day. Dale Estey estimates about 3,000 people will turn out for the run and walk, most of them from out-of-town.

All those extra people are anticipated to bring with them a bit of an economic boost to Renton business, including restaurants, gas stations and hotels.

Target will open a "P-Fresh," and rumor has it that the bagged produce and expanded grocery options will be available at the Renton location sometime this summer, although the corporate office has yet to confirm a date. City officials report that the P-Fresh market is expected to open sometime in the second quarter of this year.

At Monday evening's committee of the whole, Dale Estey suggested that The Landing could see even more grocery options in the near future, although she couldn't elaborate on which stores have shown interest in catering to The Landing's shopping needs. Additional clothing retailers are another possibility in the future, she said.
