The Renton School District and the Nick of Time Foundation are joining together this week in honor of National Sudden Cardiac Awareness Month.

The Nick of Time Foundation, a local non-profit organization dedicated preventing death caused by sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in young people, will hold a free youth hearth screening event at Lindberg High School on Wednesday, Oct. 3, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The screenings are intended to identify undetected heart conditions in youth — ages 16 to 24-years-old — particularly student athletes, which might increase their risk of SCA. On average, a seemingly healthy young person suffers SCA every three days in the U.S. and it’s the leading cause of death in exercising young athletes. In most cases, cardiac abnormalities are not detected, there are no warning signs, and unless a normal heart rhythm is restored within minutes, death results. Most youth sport physical examinations do not include screenings for cardiac abnormalities yet Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the leading cause of sudden death in young people and is typically the result of undiagnosed structural or electrical heart disease.

Darla Varrenti founded the Nick of Time Foundation after she lost her son Nick — a promising high school football player and the Foundation’s namesake — to sudden cardiac arrest in 2004 at the age of 16.

In addition to the screenings, attendees will be instructed on how to perform compression-only CPR and in the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) so that they can respond to an SCA victim.
