Boston Strong at Seahawks 12K

Runners don Boston apparel to show support for victims of last week's terrorist attack.

Thousands donned Seahawks apparel Sunday during the Seahawks 12K Run at the Landing; however, some chose to wear a Boston Red Sox’s hat or jersey, Celtics gear, or wrote or pinned a personal message on their race shirt to show support following last week's bombing during the Boston Marathon.

Monika Larson of North Bend and Bruce Quam of Port Orchard know first-hand the understanding of “Boston Strong.” Both have run in the Boston Marathon and say the race experience is like none other.

“How could you do that to such an iconic event, Patriot’s Day,” said Larson while warming up for the Seahawks 12K. She wore her 2008 Boston Marathon jacket. “It made me sick,” as she first learned of the bombings.

“We are runners, we just want to run,” said Quam who ran in 2011 and looks to return in 2015. “The history of the marathon and city; the whole city comes out to cheer you on. It’s terrible what happened."

Just like any major event in the city of Renton, Renton police were visible. “We have plans for any type of emergency,” said Police Chief Kevin Milosevich. Even four off-duty Renton officers (Tanuj Soni, Chris Neilsen, Chris Greenwade and K-9 Officer Cassidy Steed) ran the 12K in their full gear along with K-9 Fedor.
